Each time I visit the Rotary Garden Design Fest in Melbourne, I have to say it is the gardens of the Mornington Peninsula which give me the most pleasure. 2016 was no exception.
First in line is a wonderful garden in Sorrento by Ben McDonald.
This is a beach house, casual and made for living although the wonderful front garden doesn’t make you think that.
The front garden celebrates the local flora with panache.
Look at the gravel mulch and the balls of Westringia, floppy Lomandra…
But this home is old and so are the foundations of the garden. So, there are Camellias and ancient Tea Tree hedges.
And there are glorious tea roses to acknowledge the mix.
This is a wonderful introduction to the back garden which is made for living.
To the left is an olive grove which leads through to a patio complete with pizza oven and herb garden.
Beyond which is a tennis court.
To the right of the gate is the back of the house, espaliered citrus…
And a deck just made for a long and leisurely lunch…
This mix of an Australian gardens combined with Mediterranean magic is wonderful.
